Resident Evil and Drawing

If you ever want to see a entitled man-baby throw pissy pants crybaby tantrum, go on social media right now and see how people are reacting to this excellent movie.

Here's the setup. I don't give a shit about Resident Evil. I've played a few of them, and they're fine, but they're nothing special. They're just video games. Whatever. So far, none of the Resident Evil movies have done much of anything for me.

I went to this because I liked Weapons. I thought Barbarian was good and trippy and entertaining, but Weapons I saw like, three times in the theater. I really liked it.

So when I heard that Zach Cregger was making a Resident Evil movie next, I was a little disappointed, just because it's such a played out subgenre. Zombies and shady corporate experimentation and all that. There's been a lot of it.

But I was willing to give it a shot, and I'm glad I did! Because it was so good! The thing I liked about it, and I think this is the thing those entitled pissy pants crybabies I mentioned earlier are upset about, is that the lead actor, Austin Abrams, is not an acti0n hero. He's a guy just trying to get home to his girlfriend, and he gets caught up in some Resident Evil goings on. He's not John McLean though. He doesn't turn into a tough guy at any point. He's just a regular dude, trying not to die. It's very refreshing.

I'm really curious to learn about the FX in this movie. They were incredible. So gross and lifelike and disturbing to look at. Some of the creatures and designs were genuinely unnerving and awesome. From what I've read, the majority of the effects were either practical, or a hybrid of practical FX, puppets, and visual FX. Either way, it was very effective.

I'm disappointed that Cregger has been so put off IP work now, but it's hard not to blame him, with how obnoxious people are being about it.

The good news is that it's getting amazing reviews, both by critics and audiences. I've seen three movies recently with fairly busy theaters, and all three times it's been a delight. I hope this continues.
