Life Stuff and Wake Up Dead Man

Nothing wrong with Olive! Just needed a picture for the post

Life Stuff and Wake Up Dead Man
Olive, a precious degu

So, as some of you might know, and most of you probably don't, my wife, Sandra, went through treatment for rectal cancer a few years ago. She went through chemo, radiation, surgery, an ileostomy, and the reconnection surgery. It's been a lot. It started around 4 years ago, and it's still a big part of our lives.

Anyway, I bring this up because I took Sandra to the hospital yesterday for her follow-up colonoscopy to make sure everything is hunky-dory and she's still clear, and that she doesn't need another one for 5 years, which is a huge relief. Even better, one more year of no recurrence and she's considered officially "cured" of cancer. We were very emotional getting that news, and I wanted to share.

It's been a difficult time so far, and the last two weeks especially have been rough. I always come back to gratitude, though. No matter how shitty it can get (and oh boy can it!) I'm always just happy Sandra is still here and that I get to spend as much of my life with her as I can.

Speaking of which, we did one of our favorite things to do today, which was go to the movies. We saw the new Rian Johnson Knives Out movie, Wake Up Dead Man.

WAKE UP, DEAD MAN

Josh O'Connor and Daniel Craig in Wake Up Dead Man

I feel like this whole setup has kind of run its course. It was really fun the first time, and kind of interesting the second time, and now it just feels kind of tedious.

Sure, Daniel Craig is as charming and funny as ever, but I didn't feel like I learned anything new about Benoit Blanc, and no one in this cast came across particularly inspired or invested in what they were doing. At least with the other two movies, there were some compelling casting choices, but this one just felt like Rian Johnson ran out of interesting people who want to be in these movies. I mean, Jeremy Renner? Mila Kunis? I don't mean to be rude to these actors, but nobody in this cast was as interesting as even one of the actors in the previous two movies.

Also, I struggle to get into movies that are built around people debating the merits of religion, and Christianity in particular. It's like, I couldn't care less about any of the things motivating these characters, so why do I give a shit what happens?

Josh O'Connor and Josh Brolin in Wake Up Dead Man

I do like Josh Brolin, and he was doing his best Kris Kristofferson impersonation, and that was kinda cool, even if it was in a pretty mediocre movie in my estimation. Not a poorly made movie, but not a good fit for me.

Anyway, that's it for now. Thanks!
